Such a system is made up of successful businesses. Sustainability needs an efficient economic system. And my biggest heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you who shine bright not just as colleagues, but as wonderful human beings. So do your best to show up as the person you really are. You won't see much from me on LinkedIn for a while as I focus on my family, but I'll share one more reminder: treating people with kindness is ultimately what defines who you are. Sometimes the people who support us most really do cross over between work and personal spheres, and I am so grateful that I have so many amazing people in my life who are not only colleagues but friends. They brought so much levity to a dark time, and it even uplifted my mom who was sitting next to me, and suddenly we were both laughing through our tears. I was reminded of this when, as I sat in tears in the ICU wondering if my brother's heart rate would ever come down to normal range, and wondering how much longer my dad would survive, I got a hilarious "let's cheer Nataly up" dancing video from my longtime friends and colleagues Anna N Schlegel, Javier Díaz Fernández-Carvajal, Miguel Sepulveda (yolocalizo) □✏️□, and Edith Bendermacher. these are the things that actually matter in life. But the people, relationships, friendships. So do me a favor, reach out to the colleagues you care about affected by lay-offs, make sure they know that they matter to you as people (present tense), and not just as co-workers. Human relationships with our family members, friends, and the humans we care about are what matter most in this world. I'm not the type of person who normally shares much about my personal life with my colleagues, and let alone on LinkedIn, but in this case, I hope it helps lend some important perspective, especially to those mourning the loss of a job, on what really matters in life during these times.Įmployment is something temporary that can be regained. My brother made it through his life-saving surgery. (On the side, I did what little I could to support my own team members who lost their jobs, along with others affected by layoffs.) I ran to catch a plane, spent the days that followed racing between the nursing home, where I held my dad's hand as his life rapidly faded away, and working on my laptop from the cardiac ICU waiting room, where I stayed hoping for my brother's recovery whenever I couldn't be in the room with him. Friday of the same week, my brother had quintuple bypass surgery. Last week, coinciding with seeing 500 people I care about lose their jobs, my father was moved into hospice care. Just a reminder that while all the layoffs at big tech companies lately are heartbreaking, they are *not* what ultimately matters.
